National Girls and Women in Sports Day
This year marked the 35th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). In celebration of this event, we partnered with Kansas City Weightlifting to host a free weightlifting clinic for girls and women in the community. At this clinic, weightlifting coach Anna Martin taught us how to properly clean and jerk and helped to improve other movements related to weightlifting. We hope to host another event next year (2022) in celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports day, check back after the new year for upcoming events!
What is NGWSD? This celebration inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. The confidence, strength, and character gained through sports participation are the very tools girls and women need to become strong leaders in sports and life. A vibrant movement we celebrate annually, NGWSD honors the achievements of female athletes, coaches, and leaders and continues to Lead Her Forward by acknowledging the power of sports to unlock her limitless potential.
Why is this important? The NGWSD foundation is a part of the WSF (Women’s Sports Foundation) who aims to bring and keep girls and women involved in sports. Did you know there is a huge drop off from elementary/middle school female athletes to high school female athletes? By age 14, many girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys. Why is this? Some of the key reasons for decreased numbers are lack of access, safety and transportation issues, social stigma, decreased quality of experience, and lack of positive role models. This event and the women's sports foundation aim to change this. Sport teaches so much more than competition and teamwork to girls. It teaches leadership, confidence, positive body image, communication, trust, and much more. Sports help to keep a healthy lifestyle and can help to make positive changes in girls and women.
